Kithala Resort
Fall asleep to elephants in the Udawalawe buffer zone
Located in Udawalawe
Kithala Resort occupies four acres at the edge of Udawalawe National Park's buffer zone — close enough that elephants browse the fence line at dusk and the park gate is a seven-minute drive at sunrise. The resort is designed to disturb as little as possible: solar power, rainwater harvesting, organic waste composting, and a kitchen garden that eliminates most external supply. Chalets are raised on timber piles so that the nocturnal wildlife passes underneath unimpeded, and the observation deck above the pool is the finest free safari seat on the island — a herd of elephants crossing the open scrub at last light is a sight that needs no zoom lens. The front desk operates an in-house jeep and arranges the Elephant Transit Home visit, where orphaned calves are bottle-fed before their return to the wild.
