Deer Park Hotel

Deer Park Hotel takes its name from the spotted deer that wander freely across its gardens each morning, following the same forest corridors used by the mediaeval royalty who built Polonnaruwa just beyond the fence. Rooms are clean and airy with terracotta tiles, handwoven textiles, and verandahs that look out onto bougainvillea-draped walls — simple, honest, and perfectly attuned to the pace of a heritage town. The kitchen serves Sri Lankan rice and curry at shared tables, and the bicycle shed is always open: it is the best way to thread between the Vatadage, Rankoth Vehera, and the Royal Palace ruins before the midday heat sets in. The rooftop terrace catches the evening breeze and offers sundowners with a view of the treeline where fireflies appear at nightfall.
