Polonnaruwa

The medieval capital — stone Buddhas gazing across a thousand years.

Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka's medieval capital from the 10th to 13th centuries. Its ruins — temples, palaces, bathing pools and the serene Gal Vihara rock carvings — are among the best-preserved ancient monuments in Asia. Cycling through the archaeological park at first light, when birds outnumber visitors and dew still clings to the stone, is an experience that cannot be replicated.
