Kandy, the last royal capital of ancient Sri Lanka, cradles the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — the island's most venerated Buddhist shrine. The city sits in a bowl of green hills at the edge of the central highlands, its lake a mirror at the temple's feet. Each August, the Esala Perahera procession, with its jewelled elephants and torch-bearers, is one of Asia's greatest spectacles.
