Galle Face Hotel
Colombo's grande dame since 1864, facing the Indian Ocean
Located in Colombo
The Galle Face Hotel opened in 1864, making it the oldest hotel east of Suez still in operation, and its white colonial facade has looked out across the Indian Ocean without interruption through the reigns of kings, the terms of British governors, and the governments of independent Sri Lanka. Queen Elizabeth II stayed here. Yuri Gagarin stayed here. The original Pimm's cocktail recipe — served on the verandah since 1899 — has never been altered. The hotel occupies two wings: the Regency wing preserves the original Victorian chambers with teak floors, claw-foot baths, and views of Galle Face Green and the ocean; the New Wing offers contemporary suites with the same ocean orientation. The kitchen manages six restaurants, including the legendary Serendib buffet, and the Sundowner Terrace at dusk — where the city gathers regardless of whether they are guests — is the most democratic institution in Colombo.
