Sigiriya

An ancient citadel rising from the jungle — half ruin, half myth.

Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most dramatic landmarks. A fifth-century fortress palace crowns a volcanic plug that erupts 200 metres above the surrounding plains. Frescoes of celestial maidens adorn its sheer walls; a landscaped water garden — one of the oldest in the world — stretches at its base. To ascend at dawn, as the mist retreats from the jungle canopy, is to understand why ancient kings chose this improbable site as their seat of power.
