At 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's highest city. The British planted it as a hill station and something of their influence endures: a Tudor-style post office, a racecourse, a colonial hotel with working fireplaces. But the surrounding landscape is purely Sri Lankan — infinite rows of tea bushes rolling over misty hills, picked each morning by women in bright saris whose nimble hands are the origin of every cup.
